Gavin is the Urban Nerd let loose on the world. He is best described as Noam Chomski meets Spongebob Squarepants. This twenty-something “powerhouse” has the unique ability to mix contemporary social issues with a childishly innovative sense of humour. His African-Canadian heritage, while an important aspect of his presentation, crosses all ethnic lines. A hard-hitting humourist, Stephens mixes the concepts of inequality with intolerance and dishes them up with refreshing honesty.
An astute and cynical observer, Stephens has nevertheless been almost unable to cross the bridge into full-fledge adulthood. Because of his strictly regimented early years in a demanding military school, Gavin now clings to a happier time; a time, which includes comic books, cartoons, and mischief. This aspect of Gavin’s personality is in sharp contrast to the man he wants to become- responsible, mature, and productive. Herein lies the ultimate struggle for Gavin, which side of his personality shall dominate?
In 1998, Gavin Stephens was nominated for the prestigious Tim Sims Encouragement Fund Award in Toronto, and annual event in the comedy community, honouring the best young comedians in Canada. His taped-for-telecast performance drew rave reviews after airing on The Comedy Network. Since then Gavin has taped his own comedy special on CTV, he’s been to Just For Laughs, and has appeared in many movies and television shows including, Open Mike With Mike Bullard, and the Tuxedo with Jackie Chan. He’s been voted one of the top comics in the country, and was nominated for a Canadian Comedy Award.
Currently touring the North American countryside, Gavin Stephens continues to hone his comedy craft, making friends and finding fans along the way. Having recently preformed at the Laffapalooza festival in Atlanta, Gavin is making significant strides in the United States through the underground comedy scene. As well as many appearances in movies and television. www.gavinstephens.ca
